Gary Neville has warned Manchester United that they need to step their game up in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils are likely to be linked with a whole host of players in the coming weeks and months as Ole Gunner Solskjaer looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.

Manchester United currently find themselves in sixth place in the Premier League table and with an uphill task to finish in the top four and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Solskjaer will likely already be thinking about the summer window and the potential players he could bring in to add to his squad this summer.

And former Manchester United defender Neville believes that it’s important that Manchester United step their game up in the transfer window as they make sure that they bring in the right players.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: “You cannot succeed at a football club nowadays without having an incredible amount of good support and recruitment people.

“He [Solskjaer] obviously has that in terms of Mick Phelan, Sir Alex Ferguson and his coaching staff, as well as David Gill being on the board.

“Recruitment is an art form. You are swimming with the sharks, and you need to make sure you have people at the club who are capable of swimming with them. I do think Manchester United in these recent years have just dropped a little bit in that sense.

“For me, it is a big job in the next few months to ensure he gets the players he wants so they can challenge for the title next season against the likes of Liverpool and City.”

Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host West Ham United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

The Red Devils are looking to break back into the top four after their recent run of two losses in their last Premier League outings left them sixth and three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
