Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Man United should sign Dutch defender
Former Man United star Jesper Olsen believes Matthijs de Ligt would be a great addition to the Red Devils team
Manchester United should enter the race to sign Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to former Red Devils winger Jesper Olsen.
The Red Devils are bound to be linked with a host of players in the summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to leave his mark on the Manchester United team.
The 20-time English champions are thought to have identified centre-half as a key area where Manchester United need to strengthen ahead of the new season.
Reports on Thursday suggested that Manchester United had made Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane their first-choice signing to improve their back four.
De Ligt has been regularly linked with a move to La Liga champions FC Barcelona throughout the season, although there has been a sense that the Spanish side may need to sell to rustle up funds for the Dutchman.
And former Manchester United star Olsen believes that De Ligt would be a great addition to the Red Devils team.
“No doubt about it [he could play for United],” Olsen told Omnisport, as quoted by Sky Sports.
“Playing at Ajax, you have to be a quality player. So, of course he could [play for United], no doubt about it. He could fit into any top team at the moment.”
He added: “I think nowadays the top clubs are very much of the same belief in how you play, they like to be in control of the game.
“So as long as he goes to one of those clubs, I think a player of [his] calibre would fit in in most teams.”
De Ligt has netted 10 times in 105 games in all competitions for Ajax since his debut season in 2016-17.
The 19-year-old is already a regular member of the Netherlands national team set up despite his relative inexperience.
De Ligt has been partnering the world’s most expensive defender Virgil van Dijk at international level.
