The Netherlands international is one of the most exciting defensive prospects in European football after another impressive season at Ajax.
The 19-year-old became the youngest-ever player to captain a Champions League team in the quarter-finals following Ajax’s 1-0 loss to Real Madrid in midweek.
De Ligt has been linked with a host of top clubs in Europe since the impressive centre-half broke into the Ajax team almost three seasons ago.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is thought to be interested in some defensive recruits to improve his back four in the summer.
De Ligt has been touted as a potential target for the Red Devils boss given that Solskjaer seems keen to give youth a chance at Old Trafford.
However, former Manchester United manager Van Gaal has risked the wrath of the Red Devils supporters by encouraging De Ligt to consider a move to FC Barcelona or Manchester City.
“De Ligt at Juventus? I think De Ligt can play in any competition,” Van Gaal told Ziggo Sport, as quoted by Metro.
“In Italy they are the masters of defence, so he can best develop there. If I had the chance I would go to Barcelona.
“They have central defenders who are not too good, so he will play there.
“Or I would go to Manchester City. I don’t think the central defenders are that great either, so he’ll play there too.”
Manchester United lost 1-0 to FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night after Luke Shaw’s own goal in the first half.
The Red Devils appointed Solskjaer as their permanent manager last month.
