Manchester United are facing competition from FC Barcelona and Manchester City to sign Saul Niguez in the summer transfer window, according to a report in Spain.

Spanish media outlet AS, as quoted by the Daily Mirror, is reporting that Manchester City were previously favourites to land Niguez but their bitter derby rivals have since entered the race for the 24-year-old.

The same article states that Atletico would be reluctant to sell the Spain international but suitors could sign the prized midfielder should they activate his £130m contract release clause.

According to the same story, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to sign Niguez so he can become Fernandinho’s long-term replacement in the Citizens team.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also eager to bolster his midfield options in the summer given the uncertainty surrounding Ander Herrera and Juan Mata at Old Trafford.

Niguez has scored four goals and has made one assist in 27 games in the Spanish top flight this season to underline his rising status in La Liga.

The Spain international has been a regular in Diego Simeone’s side since the 2014-15 season, which explains why he’s already racked up 240 competitive games for Atletico.

Niguez has established himself in the Spain national team, having scored three goals in 16 appearances for la Roja.
