Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Man United need 30-year-old to improve defence
Lee Sharpe instructs Man United to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld this summer
Manchester United should sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld to improve their defence in the summer, according to Lee Sharpe.
The Red Devils have struggled defensively throughout the Premier League season under Jose Mourinho and his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Manchester United lost 2-0 to defending Premier League champions Manchester City in the derby on Wednesday night to concede for the 12th successive game – and they were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea FC on Sunday.
In fact, Cardiff City have managed to keep more shutouts than Solskjaer’s men in 2018-19 Premier League season, which highlights Manchester United’s defensive problems.
The 20-time English champions are bound to be linked with a host of different defenders in the summer transfer window as the Norwegian looks to put his stamp on the squad.
Manchester United have been linked with Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and FC Barcelona centre-half Samuel Umtiti throughout the Premier League campaign.
However, former Red Devils winger Sharpe believes Manchester United should look to sign Belgian defender Alderweireld, 30, in the summer.
“There’s no doubt that Manchester United badly need to sign a new central defender after conceding so many goals this season,” Sharpe told Sporting Bet.
“I’ve seen reports linking the club with the likes of Koulibaly from Napoli and Sule from Bayern Munich, but I think we need to look closer to home in the Premier League.
“I think Toby Alderweireld would be an excellent addition to the Manchester United squad. I’d take him tomorrow if they can steal him from Tottenham.
“Alderweireld has been spoken about for the last 18 months or so at Manchester United so I would love to see the club take advantage of the clause in his contract this summer.
“Alderweireld would be a great addition to the current squad as he knows the Premier League and is an excellent defender.”
Manchester United lost 4-0 to FC Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final over two legs to end their hopes of winning the competition for the first time since 2008.
The Red Devils have only managed to finish in the Premier League’s top four on two occasions since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
