Alan Shearer believes Lionel Messi will prove the difference between FC Barcelona and Manchester United in their Champions League quarter-final clash.

The Red Devils will welcome the Spanish league leaders to Old Trafford in the first leg of their Champions League last-eight clash on Wednesday night.

Manchester United are looking to reach the last four for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, having fallen short under David Moyes in 2014.

FC Barcelona have a rich history in the tournament over the past decade after being crowned Champions League winners on three occasions.

Two of those three successes came in victories over Manchester United in the Champions League final in Rome and London in 2009 and 2011.

However, Manchester United have already managed to upset the odds in the Champions League this season after a 3-1 victory at Paris Saint-Germain in their last Uefa outing.

Former Newcastle striker Shearer believes Messi will prove the difference against what the BBC Sport pundit anticipates to be a plucky Manchester United performance.

“You cannot write off Manchester United after the way they fought back to beat Paris Saint-Germain,” Shearer told The Sun.

“But I just think Barcelona will have too much for them over two games – mainly because of that guy Lionel Messi.

“I expect it will be Messi who makes the difference against United and he is the reason I think Barca will perhaps go on to win the whole thing.

“United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserve this crack against Barca because of what they did in Paris. But I just think it will be a step too far for them.”

Manchester United haven’t won the Champions League since 2008 when the Red Devils beat Chelsea FC on penalties in the Moscow final.

Solskjaer will have fond memories of Camp Nou ahead of their return for the second leg, having scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in 1999.
