Michael Owen is backing Lionel Messi to score in a FC Barcelona victory at Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will welcome FC Barcelona to Old Trafford in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Manchester United will start the tie as underdogs given their challenging season in the Champions League and the Premier League so far.

Solskjaer’s appointment back in December helped to get the Red Devils back on track, but Manchester United could still finish the season without a trophy and a top-four spot.

The Norwegian’s biggest triumph as Manchester United manager so far came when in a 3-1 victory over Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.

Marcus Rashford netted a late penalty to seal Manchester United’s progress on away goals and set up a meeting with La Liga champions FC Barcelona.

The Spanish giants have won the last two Champions League meetings between these clubs in finals in 2009 and 2011, but Manchester United have won both of their two-legged clashes in the competition.

Former Manchester United striker Owen is backing the Red Devils to beat FC Barcelona in the first leg of their last-eight clash on Tuesday night.

“This is the first Champions League meeting between the sides since Barcelona’s famous 3-1 win in the 2011 final – a game I watched in awe from the United bench as an unused Wembley substitute,” Owen told BetVictor.

“Lionel Messi has failed to score in his last 11 Champions League quarter-final ties for Barcelona and has attempted 49 shots in this barren period.

“United have already lost at home to Juventus and PSG in the Champions League this season and I feel the Spanish giants will edge what promises to be a cracking game with opportunities at both ends.”

Manchester United lost to FC Barcelona in the Champions League final in 2009 and 2011.
