Jamie Carragher warned Liverpool FC that they can’t keep relying on last-gasp goals after the Reds left it late to seal a 3-1 victory at Southampton on Friday night.

Liverpool FC had the chance to move two points of Manchester City after the defending champions were 2-0 winners against Cardiff City at The Etihad in their mid-week fixture.

The Reds suffered an early blow when Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long scored in the eighth minute to notch up just his third goal in his last 49 games.

Naby Keita opened his Liverpool FC account before half-time with a close-range header to give Jurgen Klopp’s side a vital boost heading into the break.

Klopp turned to James Milner and Jordan Henderson in the second half but the Saints were able to keep Liverpool FC bay until the final eight minutes.

Mohamed Salah picked up the ball inside his own half and ran the length of the pitch before he had the composure to place a finish past Saints goalkeeper Angus Gunn to end an eight-game goal drought.

Henderson scored his first goal of the season to wrap up three points in the 86th minute to hoist Liverpool FC back to the top of the table with four games to play.

Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher warned that the Reds can’t continue to rely on late goals having done so in victories over Fulham, Tottenham and Southampton.

“Liverpool have answered [Man City],” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Liverpool don’t want to be doing this week in, week out. It won’t happen every time when Liverpool get the goals. What it does do is give Liverpool great belief that they can get late goals. It will be a great lift in the dressing room.”

Liverpool FC will face Chelsea FC on Sunday 14 April.
