Paul Merson states his prediction for Watford v Arsenal
Arsenal legend Paul Merson doesn't expect the Gunners to beat Watford at Vicarage Road on Monday night
Paul Merson is backing Watford to ease to a narrow 1-0 win against Arsenal in their Premier League meeting at Vicarage Road on Monday night.
The Gunners will be looking to make an immediate return to winning ways following the disappointment of a 1-0 loss to Everton last weekend.
Arsenal’s defeat at Goodison Park saw Unai Emery’s side drop out of the top four at the expense of Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur.
Indeed, the north London side will start the Premier League weekend in fifth place and three points behind third-placed Chelsea FC.
Arsenal have a poor record on the road in the Premier League in Emery’s first season after a return of five victories in 15 top-flight games.
Watford booked their place in the FA Cup final thanks to a 3-2 victory over Wolves in the last four last weekend.
The Hornets have only lost five times in the league at Vicarage Road this season and they’ve been able to beat some big teams at home.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson expects the Gunners to lose a second successive Premier League game on the road at Watford on Monday night.
“You just don’t know what you’re going to get with Arsenal. You watched the way they played against Everton and you’d have thought they were in a relegation battle,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“That was poor for a team that was trying to consolidate their position in the top four. They’d have probably been there had they won that game. There’s just nothing there.
“They can win 10 games on the trot at home, but they haven’t kept a clean sheet away from home in the league all season.
“Watford usually bully them, and Arsenal will have their minds on the Napoli game at the same time. I fancy a home win, as I think Arsenal have bigger fish to fry.”
Arsenal are looking to finish in the Premier League’s top four for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
The Gunners ended up in sixth spot last term.
