Unai Emery has confirmed that Danny Welbeck will leave Arsenal this summer.

The England international’s future has been a source of speculation throughout the season as the striker’s contract continued to run down.

With Arsenal declining the opportunity to offer Welbeck a contract extension, it appeared likely that the former Manchester United star would leave the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Welbeck hasn’t featured for the north London side since he suffered a serious knee problem in a goalless draw with Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League group stage in early November.

The 28-year-old has started one Premier League game and made a further seven appearances from the bench before Welbeck suffered his season-ending injury.

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw with Brighton at The Emirates on Sunday, which all but sealed a finish outside the top four for the Gunners this term.

Asked directly about Welbeck’s future at the north London side after Sunday’s stalemate, Emery told his post-match news conference: “I spoke with the club about this situation.

“The decision is he’s going to leave.”

Emery’s predecessor Arsene Wenger signed Welbeck in a £16m deal from Manchester United in the 2014 summer transfer window.

The Arsenal striker has scored 32 times in 126 games in all competitions over the past five seasons at The Emirates.

Welbeck’s spell at the Gunners has been hampered by persistent injuries, which have limited his ability to have an impact at Arsenal.
