Graeme Souness has described Daniel Sturridge as a “passenger” in the Liverpool FC team, adding that the striker could regret not reaching his full potential in his career.

The 29-year-old was named in Jurgen Klopp’s starting line up for just the fourth time in the Premier League this season at Newcastle United on Saturday night.

Sturridge struggled to have an impact in the Premier League clash as Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi got on the score-sheet.

The England international touched the ball 45 times at St James’ Park, but Sturridge couldn’t leave an imprint on the Premier League clash.

Sturridge has endured a stop-start Liverpool FC career that has been ravaged by injury problems since his move to Anfield from Chelsea FC in a £12m deal in January 2013.

His best season at Anfield came in 2013-14, when Sturridge netted 21 goals in 28 games to help Liverpool FC challenge for the Premier League title.

And former Liverpool FC captain Souness didn’t hold back in his assessment of Sturridge’s career.

“He’s one of those boys who’ll finish his career, look back and think ‘I didn’t make the most of what god gave me’,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“I think he’s wonderfully talented. Great touch.

“When you have someone like him, so much ability, on a daily basis in training, you’d think ‘why can’t he have a pint of energy on match days?'”

The former Chelsea FC and Manchester City striker has scored 67 goals in 157 games in all competitions for Liverpool FC.

Salah, on the other, has netted 70 times in 102 outings for Liverpool FC since his move to Anfield from AS Roma in a £39m deal in 2017.
