John Barnes: Why Liverpool FC don’t need any summer signings
John Barnes believes that Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returning from injury are like new Liverpool FC signings
John Barnes doesn’t believe Liverpool FC need any summer signings following the return of Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from injury.
The English centre-half started the Premier League season as Virgil van Dijk’s centre-half partner and Gomez impressed until he suffered a setback in a 3-1 win at Burnley in November.
The 21-year-old spent nearly five months on the sidelines after the former Charlton Athletic defender suffered a fracture of his lower leg at Turf Moor.
Joel Matip managed to perform to a consistent level in Gomez’s absence but the England star will be expected to retain his starting spot next to Van Dijk next season.
Liverpool FC midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench to get his first competitive minutes under his belt in Liverpool FC’s 5-0 rout of Huddersfield Town last month.
The England international suffered a serious knee injury in Liverpool FC’s 5-2 victory over AS Roma in the Champions League semi-final last term.
Liverpool FC have missed the 25-year-old’s creativity and energy in the middle of the park throughout the Premier League campaign.
And former Reds midfielder Barnes says that Gomez and Oxlade-Chamberlain returning from injury will be like new signings for the Merseyside outfit.
“The summer transfer window for Liverpool will depend on Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi staying,” said Barnes, speaking exclusively to BonusCodeBets.co.uk.
“When you look at Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returning to the team, they won’t need to bring anyone in. It won’t surprise me if Liverpool don’t make a major signing.
“The fans and club trust in what Klopp is doing, so there won’t be any disappointment if he doesn’t sign anyone.”
Liverpool FC slumped to a 3-0 loss to FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.
