Juan Mata has moved to back Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea despite his latest mistake in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea FC.

The Spanish shot-stopper has been experiencing a poor run of form in the Manchester United goal in recent months to contrast against his incredible performances in the past five or six seasons.

De Gea has been guilty of mistakes in Manchester United’s losses to FC Barcelona in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League over the past month.

His dip in form continued in the top-four clash between Manchester United and Chelsea FC on Sunday to raise genuine concerns about his dramatic loss of confidence.

Mata broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when the Spanish playmaker finished from close range to settle the home side’s nerves against his former club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side appeared to be coasting against an out-of-sorts Chelsea FC team before De Gea’s error led to their equaliser before half-time.

The Man United goalkeeper parried Antonio Rudiger’s routine shot into the path of Marcos Alonso, who finished from an acute angle to punish his compatriot.

However, Mata refused to point the finger at De Gea after Manchester United’s 1-1 stalemate.

“David is unquestionable for me,” Mata told Sky Sports.

“His levels have been fantastic for this club. He has been the best player over the last years. The amount of points that he has saved us is incredible.

“We all have good and bad moments throughout our careers, but, for me, the important thing is how we react and he’s determined to react positively, to do what he does best, which is being the best.

“I have 100 per cent confidence in him – we all have. Today he is not happy, we are not happy, but tomorrow morning he will come back to training with the best attitude as always.”

Manchester United remain in sixth place and three points behind Chelsea FC in fourth.
