Juan Mata sent a seven-word apology to Manchester United supporters after their failure to finish in the top four this season.

The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw with relegated Huddersfield Town at John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United’s underwhelming result came less than 24 hours after Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

By doing so, Spurs left the door ajar for both Arsenal and Manchester United to put pressure on Tottenham ahead of the final round of fixtures.

But Scott McTominay’s opening goal was cancelled out by Isaac Mbenza before half-time to result in a disappointing stalemate at Huddersfield.

Manchester United failed to qualify for the Champions League for the fourth time in six seasons as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to revamp his squad this summer.

Writing on his website about the disappointing result, Mata kept his message to Manchester United supporters succinct:

“You deserve better. No more words needed.”

Manchester United will finish the season without silverware for the second successive campaign.

The Red Devils lost to Wolves in the FA Cup quarter-final before Manchester United suffered a resounding 4-0 aggregate defeat by FC Barcelona in the Champions League last eight.

The 20-time English champions haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson got his hands on the trophy for the final time.
