Matthijs de Ligt breaks silence about reported Man United interest
Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt appears to play down reports linking him with a move to Man United this summer
Matthijs de Ligt has attempted to play down transfer speculation linking the Dutch centre-half with a move to Manchester United this summer.
The Netherlands international has been linked with a potential move to the Premier League side in the upcoming transfer window following a standout campaign at Ajax.
De Ligt established himself as one of the chief leaders within the current Ajax team despite the Dutch centre-half’s relative inexperience at the age of 19.
Indeed, the teenager produced brilliant performances to help Ajax beat Real Madrid at The Bernabeu and Juventus in Turin to progress to the Champions League semi-finals.
Although Ajax couldn’t find a way past Tottenham Hotspur in the last four, De Ligt emerged with a lot of credit to make him one of the best defensive prospects in Europe.
Given Manchester United’s struggles at the back over the past 12 months, it’s little surprise that the Red Devils are being linked with a move to sign De Ligt.
Reports in the Spanish media in recent days suggested that Manchester United were ready to put a financial package together that would dwarf FC Barcelona’s deal.
However, De Ligt has appeared to play down reports linking the Dutchman with a potential move to Manchester United in the upcoming transfer window.
“I have read the reports about Manchester United,” De Ligt told FOX Sports, as quoted by Metro.
“I have made quite a tour through Europe haven’t I?
“My focus is on the Nations League and after that I will see what will happen.
“I have seen the salary I would get, too. Would you take it? People should take these reports with a grain of salt. The stories are funny though.
“Everyone has been talking about my future for a year now. One day I will go there, and the next day I will go somewhere else.”
