Manchester United are on the brink of a deal to sign Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt, according to a report in Spain
Manchester United are on the verge of signing Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to a report in Spain.
Spanish media outlet RAC1, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that Manchester United are leading the race to sign the Netherlands international ahead of the summer transfer window opening.
The same article states that De Light has received an offer from the Premier League side that has proven too difficult to resist despite interest from FC Barcelona.
According to the same story, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to sign the Dutch centre-half to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Manchester United need to improve their defence following a difficult season for Solskjaer’s defence in which they conceded 54 times in 38 games in the top flight.
Remarkably, the 20-time English champions had the eleventh-best defence in the Premier League last term – Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Newcastle United all conceded less goals than Manchester United.
De Ligt was a key part of the Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-finals before the Dutch outfit lost to Tottenham Hotspur on away goals in Amsterdam.
However, Ajax did manage to secure famous wins at Juventus and Real Madrid in the quarter-finals and round of 16.
