Manchester United are looking to hijack FC Barcelona’s bid to sign Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to a report in Spain.

Spanish media outlet Catalunya Radio, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that the Red Devils have made a better offer than FC Barcelona for De Ligt.

The same article states that FC Barcelona had reached a verbal agreement with De Ligt’s outspoken agent Mino Raiola over a summer move to Camp Nou.

According to the same story, Raiola has since returned to FC Barcelona looking to secure higher wages and a bigger agent’s fee, holding up a potential summer move.

The report goes on to claim that Manchester United are prepared to meet Raiola’s demands but FC Barcelona are refusing to budge.

The La Liga champions are confident that De Ligt has his heart set on a move to FC Barcelona, according to Catalunya Radio.

Manchester United won’t be able to offer the Ajax captain Champions League football next season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table.

However, the Netherlands international would be able to be part of a new era at the 20-time English champions if De Ligt should decide to move to Old Trafford ahead of FC Barcelona.
