The Daily Mirror reported on Monday that Mourinho’s successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made Pepe one of his top targets to improve the Manchester United squad in the summer transfer window.
The same story claimed that the Red Devils were eyeing a offer for the £45m-rated Lille forward in a bid to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season.
Pepe is thought to be attracting interest from a host of Premier League clubs this summer following an eye-catching season for Ligue 1 side Lille.
The 23-year-old scored 20 goals and made nine assists in 36 appearances in Ligue 1 to make him one of French football’s most-exciting talents.
Asked whether he would sign Pepe at his next club during an interview with L’Equipe, Mourinho gave a glowing review of the Lille forward:
“I don’t know what my next club will be! But everyone knows that he is a quality player in the making.”
Manchester United are in desperate need of reinforcements following a disappointing sixth-placed finish in the Premier League in the 2018-19 season.
The Red Devils failed to win a trophy this season to cap what was ultimately a disappointing season for the 20-time English champions in all competitions.
Manchester United sacked Mourinho back in December following a 3-1 loss to Liverpool FC at Anfield.
