Jamie Carragher praised Divock Origi for his “vital” goal in Liverpool FC’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday night.

Liverpool FC didn’t appear to be suffering from a Champions League hangover when Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock in the 13th minute with a free header.

However, Newcastle were level less than 10 minutes later when Christian Atsu finished from close range after Trent Alexander-Arnold blocked Salomon Rondon’s initial effort with his arm on the line.

Liverpool FC didn’t require long to restore their lead when Mo Salah guided a finish into the Newcastle net after Alexander-Arnold’s superb cross found the African.

But Newcastle were level once more when Veneuzla international Rondon fired an instinctive volley past Alisson Becker to cast doubt on Liverpool FC’s title ambitions.

Origi replaced Salah in the second half when the African forward suffered a head injury.

And the Belgium international scored the winning goal when his header found the net thanks to a deflection off Jamaal Lascelles.

Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher felt Origi’s goal could prove vital in the title race.

“They’ve done it again. Another late goal. How often have they done it!” Carragher told Sky Sports. “They’re keeping the title race alive. The title was on the line.

“I questioned whether Liverpool had the strength from the bench. Origi has shown again. Late goal against Everton. Late goal against Newcastle.

“It’s a great delivery again. How vital is that goal. We’ll only know at the end of the season.”

Carragher added: “You talk about late goals winning titles. How often have Liverpool done that this season?”

The Merseyside outfit will return to Champions League action with a home clash against FC Barcelona on Tuesday night after Liverpool FC lost 3-0 at Camp Nou last week.

Liverpool FC will take on Wolves in their final Premier League fixture of the 2018-19 season, while Manchester City will have to make the trip to Brighton and Hove Albion.
