Mark Lawrenson praised Divock Origi for a “great leap” to score Liverpool FC’s dramatic late winner in a 3-2 victory at Newcastle United on Saturday night.

Liverpool FC suffered a 3-0 loss to FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final last week to cast doubt on their hopes of reaching the top four.

The Reds settled into the Premier League tie quickly when Virgil van Dijk scored with a free header from a corner to give the visitors an early lead at St James’ Park.

However, Newcastle were level shortly after when Christian Atsu finished from close range, although Trent Alexander-Arnold could have been sent off for handling the ball on the line before the home side’s equaliser.

Liverpool FC restored their lead before the break when Salah finished from close range after Alexander-Arnold picked out the Egypt international with a superb cross.

But Newcastle equalised after the break when Salomon Rondon fired past Alisson Becker to cast doubt on Liverpool FC’s title hopes.

Liverpool FC looked to be heading for a damaging draw before substitute Divock Origi netted a header with four minutes to go to seal a 3-2 win.

Former Reds defender Lawrenson gave his verdict on Origi’s winner.

“Origi made a great leap against his marker and just got enough on it,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport. “There was loads of pace on the ball and he just helped it into the corner.”

Liverpool FC will return to Champions League action when the Reds welcome FC Barcelona to Anfield for the second leg of their semi-final tie.

The Reds are looking to reach the Champions League final in successive seasons after the Merseyside outfit lost 3-1 to Real Madrid last term.
