Paul Merson is backing Liverpool FC to ease to a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in their Premier League clash at St James’ Park on Saturday night.

The Reds will look to avoid a Champions League hangover when Liverpool FC make the trip to Newcastle in pursuit of a ninth successive Premier League win.

The Merseyside outfit lost 3-0 to La Liga side FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday to leave Jurgen Klopp’s side with an uphill task to reach the Madrid showpiece.

Liverpool FC will be hoping to make a swift return to winning ways at Newcastle with the Premier League title race entering the final two weeks of the 2018-19 season.

The Reds were 4-0 winners against Newcastle on Boxing Day in the reverse fixture at Anfield, while Liverpool FC haven’t lost a Premier League fixture to the Magpies since 2015.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is confident that Liverpool FC will continue their winning run in the Premier League with a straightforward to victory over Newcastle.

“You hope Liverpool win, you really do, because otherwise you look at it and the fact they lost 3-0 at Barcelona, and if they draw here their season’s fizzled out in four days,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I think they’ll win, the other night they just came up against an extraordinary club. They don’t deserve their season to fizzle out. They should at least take it to the last day.

“Newcastle will make it a long night for them, they’re used to being tight, they don’t have to entertain, their fans know what they’re like, they’ll make it hard and it’ll be a tough one.”

Liverpool FC are in second place in the Premier League table and a point adrift of Manchester City with two games left to play in the current campaign.

The Reds have never won the Premier League title but finished second in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
