Michael Owen reacts as Liverpool FC beat Tottenham to win Champions League
Michael Owen gives his verdict on the Liverpool FC team after their 2-0 win over Spurs in the Champions League final
Michael Owen hailed Liverpool FC as an “unbelievable” team after the Reds were 2-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final on Saturday night.
Liverpool FC were looking to make amends for their Champions League final disappointment last term when the Reds lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in Kiev.
Jurgen Klopp’s side made the perfect start when Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock in the second minute after Moussa Sissoko was adjudged to have handled the ball inside his area.
Spurs had 64 per cent possession in the first half but Mauricio Pochettino’s side couldn’t break down the Liverpool FC defence as Hugo Lloris had to tip Andy Robertson’s long-range effort over the bar.
Liverpool FC managed to keep Tottenham at bay in the second half despite Mauricio Pochettino bringing on Lucas Moura and Fernando Llorente.
And it was Liverpool FC substitute Divock Origi who doubled the Merseyside outfit’s lead in the 87th minute.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen delivered a glowing verdict on Klopp’s team after their 2-0 victory over the north London side in Madrid.
“It’s absolutely brilliant,” Owen told BT Sport.
“Liverpool have played so well all season and what have they been given for it in the Premier League? Nothing. So who cares if they played well or poorly – the main thing today was getting over that line and getting your hands on that trophy, because this team are unbelievable.
“This is their cycle now. They have to win trophies while they’re at the top of their game. And they’ve gone and won the big one for starters.”
Liverpool FC had won the Champions League on five previous occasions prior to Saturday night’s clash in Madrid.
However, the Reds lost to Real Madrid in the 2018 final after a 2-1 loss to AC Milan in Athens in 2007.
