John Barnes tips Liverpool FC star to win Ballon d’Or
Liverpool FC legend John Barnes is backing Virgil van Dijk to win the Ballon d'Or
John Barnes says Virgil van Dijk deserves to win the next Ballon d’Or for his impact at Liverpool FC.
The Netherlands international capped a brilliant first season at the Merseyside outfit by winning the Champions League in Madrid on Saturday night.
Van Dijk produced one of the standout moments of the final when he calmly dispossessed Son Heung-min when the South Korea international looked to be clear on goal.
The 28-year-old was named the man of the match for his performance in the heart of the Liverpool FC defence at Wanda Metropolitano.
Liverpool FC finished in second place in the Premier League table and a point adrift of champions Manchester City after a pulsating title race.
However, the Reds did finish with the best defensive record thanks to Van Dijk’s leadership qualities at the back bringing the best out of his team-mates.
The world’s most expensive defender was named the PFA player of the year for his peerless centre-half performances throughout the season.
Former Liverpool FC captain Barnes claimed that Van Dijk deserved to win the Ballon d’Or for his standout campaign in the Reds team.
“Normally when you look at the Ballon d’Or winners, they’re either attacking midfield players or centre-forwards. They are goalscorers and eye-catching players,” Barnes told talkSPORT.
“But there haven’t been any of those types of players who have really set the world alight this season.
“So from a point of consistency and from a point of success, for me Van Dijk would have to be the man.”
Liverpool FC won their first major trophy under Jurgen Klopp following their 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the Champions League final in the Spanish capital on Saturday night.
