Jose Mourinho: This Liverpool FC star is a ‘king’
Jose Mourinho singles out Virgil van Dijk as one of Liverpool FC's key players this season
Jose Mourinho has heaped praise on Virgil van Dijk following his strong performances for Liverpool FC this season.
The Netherlands defender joined the Reds from Southampton in the January transfer window in 2018 and has quickly become one of the Merseyside outfit’s most important players.
Van Dijk has helped to stabilise the Liverpool FC defence this season and the Reds have looked much more solid at the back since the arrival of Van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
The pair helped to keep Tottenham Hotspur at bay as the Reds beat Spurs 2-0 in the Champions League final on Saturday thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi.
Mourinho was on pundit duty for beIN Sports for the game and he singled out Van Dijk, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson as some of the Liverpool FC team’s key players.
Speaking in an interview with RT as quoted by Metro, Mourinho said: “I go to Alisson, especially because on Saturday [in the final] he was there when the needed him to be there.
“The two full-backs also have to be Liverpool players, amazing players, Alexander-Arnold and Robertson. Amazing character and personality.
“One [Alexander-Arnold] is a local boy, another [Robertson] is a Scottish boy that a few years ago was relegated with Hull City.
“And both they are physical, they are aggressive, they are what I call in football ‘the good arrogance’, they are not afraid to play, they go forward, they participate in attack.
“And even in a game on Saturday under huge pressure they were very, very good. Van Dijk is a king, he is a huge personality. Positionally, a top top player.”
Van Dijk was an ever-present force in the Liverpool FC defence this season, scoring four goals and making two assists in 38 games in the Premier League for the Reds.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international also scored two goals and made two assists in 12 Champions League appearances for the Merseyside outfit.
