Xherdan Shaqiri issues Liverpool FC challenge after Champions League triumph
Xherdan Shaqiri wants to help Liverpool FC win the Premier League title next season
Xherdan Shaqiri says he is focused on helping Liverpool FC to challenge for the Premier League title next season after their Champions League final triumph over Tottenham Hotspur.
The Reds banished the demons of last season’s final by claiming a 2-0 victory over Spurs in the showpiece in Madrid on Saturday night as they won their first major trophy under Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool FC will now be hoping to mount a serious challenge for next season’s Premier League title after they missed out on the trophy this season by finishing a single point behind Manchester City.
Shaqiri made two assists in four appearances in the Champions League for the Reds to help them reach the final, although he did not feature against Spurs at the weekend.
The 27-year-old scored six goals and made three assists in 24 Premier League appearances for the Merseyside outfit as they finished second in the table.
Now, the Switzerland international has revealed that he is determined to try and help the Reds go one step further in the Premier League next season.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Express, Shaqiri said: “Is this why I came to Liverpool? Yes.
“This club needs to win titles, and it’s a good start to win this one, no? Now next year we are going to go again and try to win the Premier League.
“That’s my big dream, to win the Premier League with this club.
“It just feels amazing. It’s been a long time since Liverpool won this title, 2005. It’s amazing to give the fans what they deserve.
“This club deserves everything, the staff, everyone involved. I think we’re going to have a big, big party!
“Of course if we didn’t win it, we’d have been very disappointed. We played such a good season, and we deserved to win at least one trophy.
“Now we won the biggest title in Europe, it’s amazing. It doesn’t happen every day.
“We are a very good team and we work hard together every day. I hope we can go on, this is just the start and we can win many more titles.”
Liverpool FC will take on Chelsea FC in the Uefa European Super Cup in Istanbul in August.
