Spanish media outlet Sport, as quoted by the Daily Mirror, is reporting that the Red Devils have been handed a big boost in their bid to sign the Netherlands international this summer.
The same article states that De Ligt’s advisors are encouraging the promising defender to move to a club where he’s guaranteed to get regular first-team football to continue his development.
According to the same story, they believe the teenager would be best served moving to a club like Manchester United before going on to join FC Barcelona in a few seasons.
The Daily Mirror report quotes his advisors as saying:
“If you go to United, in three years Barca will pay whatever it costs for you.”
De Ligt earned plenty of plaudits thanks to Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals last season.
The Dutch centre-half helped Ajax to beat Juventus in Turin and Real Madrid at The Bernabeu en route to the last four.
Ajax lost to Tottenham Hotspur on away goals to miss out on their first Champions League final appearance since 1995.
The Red Devils are in desperate need of new defenders after Manchester United conceded 54 times in 38 games last term – that’s 32 goals more than Liverpool FC.
