The Netherlands international has been linked with a move to the Premier League over the past couple of months following his standout performances for Ajax in the Champions League.
De Ligt excelled in Ajax’s surprise victories over Juventus and Real Madrid on the road to help the Dutch club reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 1995.
The Dutch teenager was thought to be heading to FC Barcelona but a deal appears to have been held up amid reported interest from a number of Premier League clubs.
Liverpool FC were touted as a potential destination for De Ligt given his international centre-half partner Virgil van Dijk is marshalling Jurgen Klopp’s defence.
Manchester United have been linked with a move to sign De Ligt as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to improve his Red Devils defence in the summer transfer window.
However, former Manchester United manager Van Gaal believes that De Ligt should opt to move to Manchester City rather than Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.
Van Gaal told Fox Sports, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News, when asked if De Ligt would fit in well at Manchester City: “I think exactly the same.
“Although De Ligt can go to Barcelona too, because I don’t like their central defenders either.
“He could play at Barcelona, but he could play for Manchester City also, and in that case I would choose Pep Guardiola over Lionel Messi.”
De Ligt and Ajax lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League semi-finals.
