Steve Nicol says he is hoping Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can build on his positive start at Liverpool FC when the England star returns to the first-team this season.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was forced to sit out the entire 2018-19 Premier League season after the England international suffered a serious knee injury in Liverpool FC’s 5-2 victory over AS Roma in April 2018.

The 25-year-old made two cameo appearances at the end of the Premier League campaign last term to make his comeback following a lengthy injury lay-off.

However, Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t started a competitive game since the first leg of the Champions League semi-final over 15 months ago.

The Liverpool FC star appeared to have started to turn a corner at the 18-time English champions just before his devastating injury.

Oxlade-Chamberlain finished his first season at Liverpool FC with a return of five goals in 42 games in all competitions.

Now, former Liverpool FC defender Nicol is excited to see if Oxlade-Chamberlain can continue his transformation at the Anfield outfit.

“When he got his injury, he was arguably one of Liverpool’s best players at the time,” Nicol told ESPN FC.

“It’s an interesting time to see whether he can recover completely from his injury and can he recover the form that he was showing?

“The form he was showing was not the form of Arsenal.

“This was not the Ox of Arsenal, this was a completely transformed player.

“At Arsenal he looked one-dimensional, the Ox, but when he came to Liverpool all of a sudden he did all types of different things.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain started Liverpool FC’s 6-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers in their first pre-season friendly of the new season last week.

The Liverpool FC star was an unused substitute in the Merseyside outfit’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid last term.
