Man United receive boost in race to sign top 26-year-old defender – report
Manchester United no longer face competition from Man City for Harry Maguire, according to a report
Manchester United are free to sign Leicester City defender Harry Maguire after Manchester City ended their interest in the England international, according to a report in England.
The Sun is reporting that the Premier League champions don’t plan to match Leicester’s asking price of £85m up front for the former Hull City defender this summer.
The same article states that Manchester United are now favourites to sign Maguire despite the Foxes rejecting a £70m offer for the 26-year-old centre-half last week.
According to the same story, Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer views Maguire as a key part of his plans to rebuild the 20-time English champions this summer.
The Sun report goes on to hint that Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan could prove some help in their pursuit of Maguire given Solskjaer’s No2 managed the English defender at Hull City.
Maguire signed a five-year deal with Leicester last September to leave the Foxes in a strong negotiating position.
The report adds that Maguire would prefer to move to Manchester City ahed of Manchester United this summer given the Citizens can offer the Leicester star the chance to play in the Champions League.
The Red Devils have already signed Swansea City midfielder Daniel James and Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer so far.
