BT Sport pundit compares Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette to Jermain Defoe
BT Sport pundit Joe Cole likens Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette to Tottenham legend Jermain Defoe
Joe Cole says Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette is similar in stature and style to Tottenham legend Jermain Defoe.
The France international broke the deadlock in the first half of Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Burnley at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
Lacazette managed to squeeze a shot past Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope from a tight angle after the Frenchman wiggled free of his marker.
The former Lyon striker’s goal was cancelled out by Ashley Barnes ahead of half-time before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted a winner in the second half.
Defore enjoyed two successful stints at Arsenal’s bitter north London rivals, netting 143 goals across 11 seasons at White Hart Lane.
Former Chelsea FC midfielder Cole likened Lacazette to Defoe after the Arsenal striker’s clinical finish against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
“Look at this (Lacazette goal),” Cole told BT Sport. “This is a natural goal-scorer. He’s falling over and he still manages to hit the target.
“He reminds me a lot of Jermain Defoe. He can wriggle, he can turn on a sixpence. He’s on the floor and he’s still hitting the target.”
Lacazette moved to Arsenal in a £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon in the 2017 summer transfer window following months of speculation.
The France striker has netted 37 times in 89 games across all competitions over the past two seasons or so.
Lacazette will be hoping to retain his starting spot for Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool FC in their next Premier League fixture next Saturday.
Unai Emery signed Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Dani Ceballos, Nicolas Pepe, David Luiz and Kieran Tierney in the summer transfer window.
