Calum Chambers has insisted that he is relishing the battle for a starting spot with David Luiz in the Arsenal team this season.

The Gunners completed a surprise move to sign the Brazil international from Chelsea FC on deadline day earlier this month as Unai Emery looked to bolster his options in central defence.

Arsenal saw Laurent Koscielny leave the Gunners in the summer transfer window and Emery moved quickly to bring in a ready-made replacement for the Frenchman.

David Luiz will now be competing with the likes of Chambers for a regular starting spot in the Arsenal team as he bids to try and hold down a spot in the side.

But despite the added competition, Chambers has insisted that he was delighted to see Arsenal make a move to bring in David Luiz this summer.

Speaking in an interview quoted by the Evening Standard, Chambers said: “He seems like a great guy. He is a great player, too.

“Competition will bring the best out of people. At a club like Arsenal, that is how it should be.”

Chambers also opened up about his loan spell to Fulham.

“It was always my aim to come back,” he added. “I went into the loan spell and was fully focused on giving everything for that club in every game and training session.

“I didn’t think about the future, but before I went the plan was to go, gain experience, and come back.”

Arsenal will return to Premier League action next Saturday evening when they travel to Liverpool FC in the top flight.

The Gunners have their sights set on breaking back into the top four this season after they finished in fifth place and without a trophy last term.
