Sokratis Papastathopoulos has claimed that it may be easier for Arsenal to defend against Liverpool FC this weekend than against Burnley.

The Greek defender was part of Unai Emery’s side who managed to edge to a 2-1 win over Burnley at The Emirates in their first Premier League home game of the season on Saturday lunchtime.

Papastathopoulos started in central defence alongside summer signing David Luiz as the Brazilian made his debut for the north London club following his switch from Chelsea FC on deadline day.

Arsenal were made to work hard for the victory, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netting the eventual winner in the second half at The Emirates.

The Gunners will now be turning their attentions towards their crunch showdown with Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday evening as they look to try and continue their strong start to the new campaign.

And Papastathopoulos has claimed that Arsenal may actually find it easier to defend against Liverpool FC than Burnley.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro, Papastathopoulos said: “It is a different game. Maybe it is more easy, because you don’t have to fight a lot – but they also play football.

“If they are on good day and you are having a bad day, it is hard. In the end, we know that it is difficult and we respect Liverpool a lot.

“But I think the best [way] is to go and play our style of game. We will see what happens.”

On his new partnership with David Luiz, he added: “I have known him for a lot of years. He also speaks some Greek and is a very good guy.

“I am happy also that we took a player like him, with experience.”

Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League table and level on points with leaders Liverpool FC heading into Saturday’s showdown at Anfield.

The Reds and the Gunners are the only two teams to have won their opening two games this term.
