Unai Emery delivers fresh Arsenal transfer update
Unai Emery reveals that Arsenal are still aiming to add players to their squad before next week's transfer deadline
Unai Emery has revealed that Arsenal are still hoping to add players to their squad before next week’s transfer deadline.
The Spanish head coach is currently preparing for his second season in charge of the Gunners after he was brought in as Arsene Wenger’s successor in May 2018.
Arsenal have made a number of signings this summer, including Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli, Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid and William Saliba from Saint-Etienne – although the youngster will spend next season back on loan in Ligue 1.
The north London side on Thursday confirmed the signing of Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pepe in a club-record transfer deal from Lille.
The Gunners could still be on the lookout for further reinforcements this summer before the new Premier League season gets under way next week.
Now, Emery has hinted that the north London club will attempt to do some more business before the transfer window closes next Thursday, although he was speaking before the signing of Pepe was confirmed.
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Emery replied when asked if Arsenal will be signing any more players this summer: “We are working on the possibilities to sign players.
“We signed Ceballos, and we have a possibility with Pepe [who signed for Arsenal on Thursday].
“We are looking for the possibility to improve, but only if we can take more steps in the squad.
“Our target is to sign another player if he can really, really improve us. Our target is continuing to sign another player if we can.”
Arsenal will kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday 11 August.
The Gunners are aiming to try and break back into the top four next season after they finished fifth and without a trophy last term.
