Unai Emery replies when asked whether key Arsenal defender could leave
Arsenal manager Unai Emery opens up about Nacho Monreal's future at The Emirates
Unai Emery has admitted that Nacho Monreal could leave Arsenal before the end of August.
The 33-year-old has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Sociedad before the close of La Liga’s transfer window.
Metro quote unnamed reports that suggest Monreal has agreed a two-year deal with Real Sociedad, with an option for a third year.
However, the report goes on to add that Arsenal and Real Sociedad haven’t agreed a deal for the versatile defender yet.
Monreal was part of the Arsenal side that suffered a 3-1 loss to Liverpool FC at Anfield on Saturday evening.
Mohamed Salah darted past Monreal to score Liverpool FC’s third goal of the Premier League win on Merseyside.
Asked about Monreal’s future in his post-match media conference, Emery appeared to open the door for the Spanish defender to potentially leave the north London side:
“He made a very big match and he’s a very big professional for us.
“This is one issue we need to speak in the next few days because in Europe they don’t finish the transfer window yet, but we are going to speak about all the situations and the possibilities.
“It’s the reason I was speaking about it not being normal that we finish two weeks ago in Europe because the squad is not completely closed for us at the moment.
“Some players can leave but we cannot sign another and it depends a little over the next days how we can decide about some circumstances with some players. With Nacho one possibility is open and we are going to speak about that.”
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table following their first defeat of the 2019-20 season.
The Gunners have conceded four goals in three games in the English top flight.
Arsenal will take on Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League game at The Emirates on Sunday.
The north London side signed Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Nicolas Pepe, Dani Ceballos, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz in the summer transfer window.
