BBC Sport pundit raves about Mateo Kovacic after his best Chelsea FC display
BBC Sport pundit Danny Murphy is full of praise for Chelsea FC star Mateo Kovacic
Mateo Kovavic produced his best performance in a Chelsea FC shirt in Saturday’s 3-2 victory at Norwich City, according to BBC Sport pundit Danny Murphy.
The Croatia international started in the middle of the park alongside Chelsea FC youngster Mason Mount and summer signing Christian Pulisic at Carrow Road.
Kovacic played a key role in midfield with his ability to win the ball back from opponents and set Chelsea FC on a quick break thanks to the pace of Tammy Abraham.
The Croatian midfielder impressed in the absence of N’Golo Kante, who missed the Premier League clash due to an injury problem.
Abraham scored either side of half-time and Mount scored in successive Premier League games to help Chelsea FC edge to a 3-2 victory over promoted side Norwich.
However, former Liverpool FC and Tottenham midfielder Murphy reserved special praise for Kovavcic following his dominant performance in the middle of the park.
“There were big question marks from the last season, what is he [Kovavic]? Is a holding midfielder or is he a number 10?” Murphy told Match of the Day on BBC One on Saturday night.
“But today he showed all aspects of his game. It’s probably as good a game as we’ve seen in a Chelsea shirt.
“He played in that central role but he got forward more, which we haven’t seen, he’s played a bit safe for me in the nine months of watching him.
“There was a responsibility he had to take and he did it really, really well. Without Kante, they needed someone to put his foot in because Norwich played well.
“They’ve got good footballers and someone had to stop the momentum they had at times. He was the one making things happen.”
Kovacic failed to get on the score-sheet during his season-long loan at Chelsea FC from La Liga giants Real Madrid last term.
The Blues signed the Croatian midfielder in a permanent deal in the summer after putting a deal in place to bring in Kovacic before their transfer ban.
Chelsea FC’s 3-2 win over Norwich was their first Premier League victory since Frank Lampard’s appointment.
