BT Sport pundit reacts to Christian Pulisic’s display in Chelsea FC v Liverpool FC
Jermaine Jenas has his say on Christian Pulisic's display in Chelsea FC's Uefa Super Cup clash with Liverpool FC
Jermaine Jenas heaped praise on Christian Pulisic following his impressive display in Chelsea FC’s defeat by Liverpool FC in the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday night.
Liverpool FC triumphed 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following extra-time in Istanbul as Jurgen Klopp’s men won the second trophy of the German’s reign.
The USA international has been settling into life at Stamford Bridge after having joined the Blues from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
Pulisic was a second-half substitute during the 4-0 loss to Manchester United at the weekend but he was handed a starting spot by Frank Lampard for Wednesday’s clash in Istanbul.
The 20-year-old was in fine form in the Super Cup clash, as he set up Olivier Giroud for the Blues’ 36th-minute opener and also had a goal disallowed despite a fine finish shortly after.
Giroud and Pulisic were replaced by Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham midway through the second half – and Jenas was impressed by what he saw from both players during the European showdown.
Sadio Mane equalised for Liverpool FC in the lead in the 48th minute to force extra-time.
Mane then netted again in the 95th minute to put the Reds ahead, but Jorginho equalised in the 101st minute from the penalty spot to force the game to penalties – and the Reds won.
Speaking during BT Sport‘s coverage of the game, Jenas said: “I think they [Giroud and Pulisic] were the two star performers for Chelsea this evening.
“Giroud had tough game holding that ball up.
“Christian Pulisic has shown us a few little glimpses. He had the goal that was disallowed and provided the lovely through-ball to Giroud for the goal.
“There were a few bits and pieces there [from Pulisic] for Chelsea fans to get excited about. It was a good evening’s work.”
Chelsea FC will return to action this weekend when a home clash against Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool FC, meanwhile, will take on Southampton on Saturday afternoon in their first away Premier League game of the new campaign.
