Paul Elliott says Chelsea FC are capable of finishing in the top four this season despite their stuttering start to the new campaign.

The Blues picked up their first Premier League win of the season at the weekend when they claimed a 3-2 win at Norwich City to seal their first victory under Frank Lampard.

Chelsea FC had previously been thrashed by Manchester United on the opening weekend, before a draw at home to Leicester City.

The west London side will have their focus on trying to maintain a place in the top four this season after they finished third in the top flight last term.

Former Chelsea FC hero Elliott says a title challenge is out of reach, but he is confident that his ex-employers can make a bid to finish in the top four this season.

Speaking in an interview with football.london, Elliott said: “I’m not sure what Chelsea’s targets will be personally but they will want to be competitive. It’s fair to say they are not going to win the Premier League, we know that.

“But could they finish in the top four? That is possible. I think Chelsea can finish in the top four, there is no doubt about that and they may win a Cup as well.

“They are capable but I think the bigger message is that Frank Lampard is giving the Chelsea youngsters an opportunity to flourish, that’s the bigger picture.”

Chelsea FC are currently preparing for their home Premier League clash against Sheffield United in the top flight on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues are in 13th place in the Premier League table after having taken four points from their opening three top flight games under new boss Lampard.
