Robin van Persie believes Manchester City are scared of Liverpool FC despite winning the Community Shield last weekend.

The Citizens beat their title rivals on penalties after Joel Matip had cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s opening goal in normal time at Wembley.

Manchester City finished a point ahead of Liverpool FC in the title race last term despite the Reds holding an eight-point advantage in February.

Liverpool FC paid the price for their 2-1 loss to the Citizens at The Etihad, which was their only league defeat of the season.

However, the result was against the norm as Liverpool FC have a good record against Pep Guardiola’s side since Klopp took over the reins.

Liverpool FC beat Manchester City 5-1 in the Champions League quarter-finals in the 2017-18 season.

Former Manchester United striker Van Persie believes that Manchester City are scared of Liverpool FC ahead of the start of the new season this weekend.

“The way they play, the way they go in behind, the way they hurt opponents with their fast attackers,” Van Persie told BT Sport, as quoted by the Daily Express.

“The midfield is always there, it’s very strong.

“City, I think, are scared of Liverpool.

“City, in a way, are scared of nobody except Liverpool.”

The former Arsenal and Manchester United striker went on to add that Liverpool FC and Manchester City are the two best teams in the Premier League.

“I think what we learnt [on Sunday] is that these two teams, Liverpool and Manchester City, are the best teams,” Van Persie added.

Liverpool FC won the Champions League last season with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi.

The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title since the division’s inception in 1992.
