Virgil van Dijk says both Liverpool FC and Manchester City have “incredible” teams ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Citizens are the reigning Premier League champions after Manchester City finished a point ahead of Liverpool FC in the title race last term.

Liverpool FC finished with the best defensive record in the top flight and Alisson Becker kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper.

Jurgen Klopp’s side missed out on the chance to win the Premier League but the Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 to win the Champions League.

Manchester City beat Liverpool FC on penalties in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday after Joel Matip cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s opener.

Speaking to ESPN about Manchester City and the title race this season, Van Dijk is anticipating a difficult title race between the two rivals.

“They [Manchester City] are incredible,” Van Dijk said.

“And so are we. To get so close in the league was remarkable — 97 points and just one defeat — so it was disappointing not to win it, but I put that feeling away. I could respect that City were one point better last season. It’s driven me on to work even more, to push the limits and help do everything we can to win.

“We know it will be difficult, because they will improve and so will the other teams, but we are not afraid of challenges.”

Liverpool FC are looking to win the Premier League title for the first time after finishing in second place on four different occasions.

Gerard Houllier’s side finished as runners-up behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race in the 2001-02 season.

Manchester United ended up as champions in 2008-09 after Sir Alex Ferguson’s men finished four points ahead of Rafael Benitez’s Reds side.

Steven Gerrard’s famous slip against Chelsea FC and a second-half collapse against Crystal Palace cost Liverpool FC in 2013-14.
