Virgil van Dijk has warned that Liverpool FC need close the gaps in their defence ahead of Saturday afternoon’s trip to Southampton.

Liverpool FC have won their opening two games of the 2019-20 season in rather unconvincing fashion.

The Reds were 4-1 winners against promoted side Norwich City in their Premier League opener at Anfield last weekend.

The Merseyside outfit conceded a number of chances against the Canaries but the Champions League holders weren’t punished.

Liverpool FC beat Chelsea FC 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following 120 minutes of football in the Uefa Super Cup.

Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock in the first half before Sadio Mane scored in the second half and then extra-time to put Liverpool FC ahead.

However, Adrian conceded a penalty to give Jorginho the chance to equalise before Tammy Abraham missed his spot-kick in the shootout.

Liverpool FC finished with the best defensive record in the Premier League last term after conceding 22 times in 38 outings.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side have already shipped two goals in three games this term.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro about their defending in the Uefa Super Cup, Van Dijk admitted that the Merseyside outfit need to improve at the back.

“I think we started good. We did well, we put them under pressure, we had moments.

“I think at times we lost the ball a little bit too easy and the gaps were too big and they did well, they countered on us in a couple of moments and became dangerous.

“[We had] a couple of moments that were a bit lucky with the offside trap and stuff, but after the break we did very well.

“We came out and we showed what we all want to see and then after that they had moments, we had moments as well and it could go any way. After all, it’s all about a bit of luck in the penalty shootout.”

Liverpool FC finished in second place in the Premier League table last term.
