The former Cameroon international was an unsung hero for Liverpool FC last season after Matip deputised for Gomez during his injury lay-off.
Matip forged an impressive partnership with Van Dijk in the second half of the season as Liverpool FC finished in second place in the Premier League table.
The Reds ended up with the best defensive record in the 2018-19 Premier League season after conceding 22 times in 38 outings in the top flight.
Matip performed well in Liverpool FC’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in June.
However, Klopp opted to start with Gomez ahead of Matip alongside Van Dijk for Liverpool FC’s victory over Norwich City.
Liverpool FC produced a poor defensive display but the promoted side were unable to punish the Champions League winners.
But former Reds defender Carragher felt a degree of sympathy for Matip after his omission.
“He deserved to be in [the Liverpool FC team],” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I think he was harshly done by. On the back of his performance last season, he deserved to be him.
“Maybe if it was a tough away game, Gomez might have been at full-back.”
Liverpool FC were ahead inside 10 minutes when Norwich defender Grant Hanley scored an own goal.
The Reds eased to a resounding victory courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Divock Origi.
Liverpool FC will make the trip to Southampton in their next Premier League fixture at St Mary’s on Saturday 17 August.
