Unai Emery previews Liverpool FC v Arsenal
Arsenal manager Unai Emery jokes that the Gunners never enjoy playing Liverpool FC ahead of Saturday's trip to Anfield
Unai Emery has joked that Arsenal never want to play Liverpool FC ahead of their Premier League meeting at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners will make the long trip to Merseyside hoping to preserve their 100 per cent start in the new Premier League season.
Arsenal were 1-0 winners at Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the season before the Gunners eased to a 2-1 victory over Burnley at The Emirates last week.
Liverpool FC opened up the new Premier League season with a 4-1 win against Norwich City before the Reds edged to a 2-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s last weekend.
Arsenal don’t have a great record against Liverpool FC at Anfield over the past five or six years, including a 5-1 loss to Jurgen Klopp’s men at Anfield last season.
Emery admitted that Arsenal aren’t big fans of playing against Liverpool FC in the Premier League.
“For us, we don’t want to play against Liverpool ever,” Emery is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard. “We’d prefer not to play against them!
“That is really our challenge, a good test. For the supporters, for all of us, going there with six points is good. Really our target is to reduce the distance to Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea.
“When we play against them it is a big challenge to show how we can be. Next week is going to be a very good match.
“We are going to prepare first with the adaptation to them, their game plan and individual players and after to impose our game plan and capacity. We are going to prepare both defensively and offensively.
“I think first is to be positive in our capacity and then work hard. I know my past is to work hard, the present and future is going to be the same. After we can win, we can lose. But above all is be positive and keep moving ahead.”
Arsenal finished 27 points adrift of Premier League runners up Liverpool FC last term.
The Reds won the Champions League last season thanks to a 2-0 victory over Arsenal’s bitter north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid last season.
Liverpool FC won the Uefa Super Cup earlier this month after Klopp’s side beat Chelsea FC on penalties in Istanbul.
The Merseyside outfit have never won the Premier League.
