The France international has spent the past four seasons at Old Trafford following his £36m move to Manchester United from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in 2015.
Martial initially made an impressive start to his Manchester United career but the 23-year-old struggled to have a telling impact during Jose Mourinho’s spell in charge.
Current Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to start Martial for the visit of Chelsea FC in their Premier League opener on Sunday.
Martial justified his inclusion with a goal in the 65th minute to help Manchester United ease to a resounding 4-0 victory over their top-four rivals.
Former Manchester United defender Neville has now challenged Martial to deliver his talent on a regular occurrence throughout the 2019-20 Premier League season.
“Martial has not realised his potential on the left side for three or four years and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is probably thinking he wants to play centre forward, he’s a good finisher, I have to give him that chance,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“You could argue it’s to the detriment of Rashford, but if he can get his head around playing on the left and be comfortable and Martial can be a centre-forward then it’s worth giving him that chance.
“At Manchester United when there’s speculation around Martial leaving there’s been a big fear that he will go to another club and become one of the best players in the world because he has got that much talent.
“I think now is the time for Martial to deliver it. He is being given his chance as a centre-forward and scored a good goal.”
Martial scored 17 times in 49 games in his first season at Manchester United despite being a raw and unproven teenager.
The French forward has struggled to surpass that goal haul in the following three seasons under Mourinho.
Martial’s future at Manchester United has been a source of debate over the past couple of seasons.
However, the French forward signed a new long-term deal with the 20-time English champions in January.
