Ole Gunnar Solskjaer names five reasons Man United signed Harry Maguire
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sings the praises of Harry Maguire after his world-record move
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quick to list Harry Maguire’s qualities after Manchester United made the England star the most expensive defender in the world.
The Red Devils confirmed the signing of the 26-year-old in an £80m deal from Premier League rivals Leicester City on Monday following months of speculation.
Maguire’s transfer was a new record fee for a defender after Manchester Unite’s deal with Leicester surpassed the £75m that Liverpool FC paid for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.
The 26-year-old established himself as one of England’s most promising centre-halves during his two seasons at Leicester, but Maguire still has room for improvement.
The Manchester United signing will get his first taste of European football when the Red Devils compete in the Europa League this season.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website about the signing of Maguire, Solskjaer was quick to list the England international’s qualities.
“Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today and I am delighted we have secured his signature,” Solskjaer told Man United’s website.
“He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure – coupled with his composure on the ball and a huge presence in both boxes – I can see he will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch.
“He has a great personality and is a fantastic addition to the club.
“I would like to welcome Harry to Manchester United and we are looking forward to working with him as we prepare for the new season.”
Maguire could make his Manchester United debut against Chelsea FC in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League last term following a disappointing season.
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson steered the club to glory in his final season in charge.
