The England international completed an £80m move to Manchester United from Leicester City on Monday to become the fourth new arrival at Old Trafford this summer,
In doing so, Maguire surpassed Van Dijk as the world’s most expensive defender after his £80m transfer fee eclipsed the £75m sum that Liverpool FC spent on Van Dijk in January 2018.
Liverpool FC were initially criticised for spending so much on Van Dijk but the Netherlands international has since established himself as the best centre-half in the Premier League.
Van Dijk became the first defender since John Terry to win the PFA player of the year award last season despite Liverpool FC missing out on the Premier League title.
The Liverpool FC star showed a touch of class with a good luck message for Maguire at Manchester United.
“Good luck to him,” Van Dijk is quoted as saying by Metro.
“I can’t say anything about that [the record] because there was always going to be a time when it was going to change.
“That’s the market. He doesn’t have any influence on that but I wish him well.
“The price comes with pressure but it doesn’t change too much because you always have pressure at big clubs like Man United. But I wish him well.”
Maguire spent two seasons at Leicester City following his £17m switch from Hull City in the 2017 summer transfer window.
Manchester United have signed Maguire, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer overhauls the Red Devils squad.
The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term.
