Luke Shaw sends Man United message to Jose Mourinho
Luke Shaw aims an apparent dig at former Man United manager Jose Mourinho
Luke Shaw has claimed that Manchester United are currently playing more possession-based football to fit the club’s style than under previous manager Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils are set to embark upon their first full season under club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his appointment as permanent manager back in March.
Solskjaer initially took over the reins on an interim basis from Jose Mourinho in December before the Norwegian head coach secured the job on a permanent basis.
Manchester United will start the new Premier League season with a tough home clash against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea FC side at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils will be looking to make a winning start as the 20-time English champions look to finish in the top four for the third time in seven seasons.
Asked about the club’s targets for the season, Shaw explained how Manchester United’s style has evolved under Mourinho’s replacement Solskjaer.
“We are Manchester United,” Shaw told Sky Sports, as quoted by Metro.
“We should be having more possession than we have been having in the last couple of years. We have worked on that more this summer.”
The reigning Manchester United player of the year went on to admit that last season was embarrassing for the club.
“We were all very disappointed,” Shaw added.
“It hurt even more that there were so many English teams around us who were playing in finals and had done well while we were just on holiday. There was nothing we could do about it other than watch the games and think.
“Of course it hurt. We all felt it. We have a lot to prove this season and I am sure we will. We are going to have a much better season.”
Manchester United have signed Swansea City winger Daniel James, Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Leicester City defender Harry Maguire this summer.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
