Ole Gunnar Solskjaer say he plans to use Paul Pogba in a more advanced role in the Manchester United team this season.

The Red Devils star has endured a mixed start to the new Premier League season.

Pogba produced two assists in Manchester United’s 4-0 victory over Chelsea FC at Old Trafford in their season opener.

However, the France international won a second-half penalty before missing his spot-kick attempt in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Wolves last week.

Pogba was criticised for assuming penalty duties ahead of Marcus Rashford, who scored from the spot against Chelsea FC.

Ander Herrera’s move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and Marouane Fellaini’s switch to China earlier this year has left Manchester United short on defensive midfield options.

When asked if Solskjaer needs Pogba to play in a more conservative role this season, the Manchester United manager is quoted as saying by Metro:

“I think Scott [McTominay] has played well in midfield, definitely.

“We’ve still got Nemanja [Matic] and Fred, who hasn’t been involved, and Andreas [Pereira] has played more advanced.

“Some games, I’m sure we’ll see Paul higher up the pitch as well and, so far, I’ve been very pleased with his performances. There are other players who have to step up, yes definitely, but so far, so good.”

The 26-year-old’s future at Manchester United has been a source of constant speculation this summer ahead of the close of the European transfer window on 2 September.

Pogba has been linked with a potential move to La Liga giants Real Madrid.

The Red Devils signed Swansea City winger Daniel James, Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Leicester City defender Harry Maguire in the summer transfer window.
