Gary Neville claimed that Manchester United “destroyed” Chelsea FC on the counter-attack after the Red Devils sealed a thumping 4-0 win over the Blues at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils took the lead in front of their home fans in the 18th minute through Marcus Rashford’s penalty.

Manchester United then scored twice in quick succession in the second half, with Anthony Martial netting in the 65th minute and Rashford adding his second of the afternoon two minutes later.

Summer signing and second-half substitute Daniel James then made it 4-0 with a deflected shot to cap a brilliant afternoon for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.

Manchester United were clinical with their chances but in truth, the scoreline was probably a tad harsh on Chelsea FC, who enjoyed a number of chances at Old Trafford.

However, Neville admitted that it was a great afternoon for Manchester United’s summer signings and the team as a whole.

Speaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Neville said: “They destroyed Chelsea on the counter-attack.

“[Harry] Maguire’s been good, [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka’s been good – and now James. The new signings have had a great day.”

On James’ goal, Neville added: “Paul Pogba does brilliantly and plays a little one-two with Martial. He holds it up and James is so fast to join the attack. He has a little bit of good fortune with the deflection.

“It makes it a dream start for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United and Daniel James.”

The result left Manchester United in second place in the table after the opening weekend of fixtures.

The Red Devils will return to action with a trip to Wolves on Monday week.
