Wayne Rooney has his sights firmly set on managing Manchester United one day, according to Rio Ferdinand.

The former Manchester United striker has just secured a return to England and will take his first steps into coaching when he arrives at Derby County from DC United in January as a player-coach.

The 33-year-old has signed an 18-month deal with the Championship side and will link up with his new employers in the new year.

Frank Lampard enjoyed a relatively successful season at Derby last term before being appointed as Chelsea FC’s new manager back in July.

According to Ferdinand, Rooney has his sights set on managing Manchester United one day, although he admits that is still probably some way off.

Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Express, Ferdinand said: “His end-game is managing Manchester United, 100 per cent. It’s a fact. If he tells you any different, he’s lying! He will want to do that.

“Only time will tell if he’s going to be the man to be able to do that. There’s obviously a lot of work to be done before that.

“But Frank’s gone to the place he will have desired more than anywhere else at Chelsea. Can that happen for Wayne? We’ll see.

“I’m not surprised Wayne has done this because I know that’s the way he wants to go, from speaking to him. It will be a great opportunity.”

Manchester United will kick off their Premier League campaign with a testing clash against Lampard’s Chelsea FC side at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils completed their third signing of the summer on Monday when they wrapped up a deal to sign central defender Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League and without a trophy last term.
