Gary Neville likens James Maddison to Man United legend
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville is a big fan of reported Man United target James Maddison
Gary Neville has likened Leicester City midfielder James Maddison to Manchester United legend Eric Cantona.
The England international emerged as a potential target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer transfer window.
However, Manchester United addressed their more pressing issues at the back rather than signing the Leicester playmaker.
Maddison’s team-mate Harry Maguire became the most expensive defender in the world when the England star completed a £80m transfer to Manchester United from Leicester City.
Manchester United signed Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Swansea City winger Daniel James as Solskjaer opted to go for British talent in the transfer window.
Maddison impressed with an important assist for Wilfred Ndidi in Leicester’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea FC in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
Former Manchester United defender Neville gave Maddison a glowing review to no doubt fuel speculation surrounding the Leicester playmaker’s future at the King Power Stadium.
“I think he’s outstanding. Number 10s aren’t as fashionable nowadays, it’s more about wide strikers who score the goals,” Neville told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
“It used to be about the Zolas and Cantonas – and he is a genuine creative player who will go on to play for England and be involved in the European Championship.
“I think he is fantastic.”
The Manchester Evening News were quick to report about calls from the club’s fans on Twitter for Manchester United to sign Maddison after his impressive performance at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw with Wolves in their Premier League meeting at Molineux Stadium on Monday night after Anthony Martial’s opener was cancelled out by Ruben Neves.
